AwardsProject of the YearVance Farm, Kanata ![]() The architects, landscape architects and interior designers of the Craftsman Movement provide the inspiration behind the design of the homes in Vance Farm, Kanata. The Craftsman Movement is not just a style of architecture, it is an entire philosophy of life. It includes attitudes and beliefs that encompass everything from art and architecture to fabric patterns and furniture design and work ethic. Architectural Design The home designs are reminiscent of homes built between 1900 and 1920. The Craftsman Style was designed for comfort and a sense of warm informality. Rooms were designed to be functional, based on the way people lived, with good sized kitchens, more open space, and less wasted space for circulation. Craftsman Style homes are aesthetically pleasing, without being overly ornate. They are noted for their honest use of materials such as shingles, stucco, brick, stone, and siding. They feature generous front porches, often with short tapered columns resting on a brick or stone base. ![]() We have honoured the men who have inspired the Craftsman Movement by naming the models in Vance Farm after them: The Morris, The Olmsted, The Mackintosh, The Ruskin, The Greene, The Wright, The Roycroft, The Dresser, The Hubbard and The Stickley. The street is named Roycroft Way. Advertising and Promotion The Vance Farm community logo features the RennieMackintosh script characteristic of the Craftsman era.
